Words for New Parents
If
you are reading this page, your life feels completely
different than it did yesterday, but please know that it will
be OK. First, let’s concentrate on the most important blessing
~ we join you in welcoming a beautiful miracle into this
world. You are having or have had a baby, and this is cause to
truly celebrate. Knowing that your baby has Spina Bifida is a
shock to all that have heard those words and we understand
what you are feeling. The Spina Bifida Association of Alabama (SBA of AL) is made up of individuals and families that, like you, are affected by Spina Bifida in some way. SBA of AL is glad to help with the learning you must now undertake. We can provide you with educational booklets that can explain some of the complicated issues associated with Spina Bifida: you need merely ask. While no one can tell exactly how your child will be affected, the information we provide should make it easier for you to understand what your medical providers tell you about your child's health and abilities. And, we believe that talking to other parents will make the sometimes overwhelming feelings of loneliness and frustrations seem somewhat more tolerable. As your child grows up and becomes more active, we strongly encourage you to participate in the meetings that we have at Lakeshore Foundation in Birmingham. This is a truly amazing facility committed to helping all with physical disabilities have more active lives. Our meetings are scheduled to coincide with Lakeshore Foundation’s SuperSport Saturdays. This time together allows the children to socialize while encouraging safe, adapted physical activity. They can make friends with others like them, and the adults with Spina bifida can socialize with other adults with Spina Bifida to learn how others have dealt with challenges. We hope you find the information on this website helpful. If you have any questions or would like to talk with someone, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are here to help you!
